Why I’m Sharing This…
Early in my career, a supervisor told me he measured our department’s success by how few paycheck complaints came in. So I asked him when anyone had last called just to say, “Thanks, my paycheck was perfect this week.” He chuckled and said never. We started talking about how leadership usually hears from people only when something goes wrong. That stuck with me.
I am sharing Stuart T.’s post because it is a good reminder that HR is proactive work. When things run smoothly, that is not an absence of effort. It is the result of it. Complaints should not be the only measure of how well HR is functioning.
Every employee who brings an issue to HR sees it as the most important one, and that is understandable. They don’t see the dozens of issues they handled before they became problems. Leaders who overlook this miss most of HR’s work.
Support your HR team in making everyone feel valued. And when you think about their success, look beyond the complaints.
